DEVOLUTION

God returned to his greatest creation
curiosity hyperbolic after years of travel
There had been some interstellar disturbances
with pressing consequences needing attention

Man, all powerful supreme ruler of the land
basked in the illusion created by his evolution
and God in his wisdom decided to remove
distinguishing features that made Man grand

On the first day he suspended hearing
on a colossal coat hanger light years away
and the dread in the inner voice of conscience
made Man become anxious, uncertain and fearing

On the second day he eliminated smell
The stocks of Spices and perfumes fell
Foul air became pure everywhere
in a world afflicted by anosmia universal

On the third day he deducted taste
And every mouthful lost distinction
culinary delights became globally bland
All flavour to savour mysteriously erased

On the fourth day he removed tactile sensation
And babies bawled at the inability to feel
Untouchability was heard of no more
and Man moaned the sensory deprivation

And so on the fifth day he subtracted speech
Chaos prevailed in the ensuing stillness
Arguments ceased in the absence of language
No lessons to teach, no passages to preach

On the sixth day he deleted the power of vision
and Man became blind to all his world
Seeing was unbelieving and unreliable
White became Black in the utter confusion

On the seventh day God as a final test
withdrew memory and cognisant thought
And now Man stripped bare of everything
forgot humanity
while God took rest

And in a coffee shop at the end of the universe
The other Gods grabbed their collective winnings
For they had gambled on the devolution of Man
And now were counting the winners purse
