IT'S ALWAYS BURNING
Introduction: One of the basic elements of life, fire spawns imagination with its all consuming force. It doesn't matter who or what starts it, but once it sparks, a fire burns without pause and this poem is about using fire as an experiment in allegory
Fire
always burning
it's always burning
with quiet rage or screaming rampage
within closed doors or the wide outdoors
threading reality with fantasy
consuming appetite, insatiable ferocity
renewing resurgence
exacting vengeance
arriving with or without invitation
cleansing purity or accusing damnation
Fire
always churning
it's always churning
in minds of scientists and poets
in press statements or verses of eloquence
heaven's wrath or hell's inferno
slow lava from a sudden volcano
embers smouldering, hiding in ash
candle light on a soft eyelash
the scented bouquet of romance
the exotic aroma of trance
spreading cheer around a blaze
hot toddy on winter days
Fire
always blazing
it's always blazing
I'm sorry did I say fire
I meant desire
but what's in a name
they function the same
licking the borders of temptation
pouring courage into hesitation
a spark, all consuming
a burst of perfume alluring
there's no smoke without a fire
or you may call it desire
for life fulfilled in living
or you may call it desire
for life fulfilled in living
it's always burning
always burning
burning
- We didn't start the fire - Billy Joel
